Nice post!

I run a house that maintains a, what we call here in Australia, “assisted self-publishing” service – which is a little bit clearer than “collaborative publishing” because it highlights that it’s a long way from a traditional model. This type of thing is definitely not for everybody, but we’re make sure that we are up-front about those services and roughly what people can expect to pay.

It’s partly out of respect for the hard work of writing, and the difficulties of getting work published at all – well, out of respect full stop – that businesses need to be totally transparent about what they do.

To me, anybody who runs a business on a “bait and switch” scheme is unfair, deceptive and – yes – predatory, exactly as you describe. It also destroys people’s trust in them, which is pretty well unforgivable.

I have two pieces under contract with Cobblestone and have yet to be paid. The first article published April 2008 (Appleseeds) and the second one January 2009 (FACES). I wouldn’t have done the second article if I knew there wouldn’t be payment. Unfortunately,I signed the 2nd contract prior to learning of Cobblestone’s financial woes.

I used to get updates from them – now I don’t get any response.

He got his Kindle about a month ago, b4 they ran out. He loved mine so much he had to get his own. Besides we started fighting over it.
