Mystic Ridge Books seeks picture books with positive themes

Posted on June 24, 2009

Mystic Ridge Books is a small press founded in 1999 with the goal of publishing books for adults and children that make them better people. MRB Kidz, the new children’s imprint, is currently interested in picture books for readers ages 8 and under. Fiction and nonfiction will be considered including how-to, nature, science, animals and history.

Books should be of universal themes, capable of being enjoyed by children of all backgrounds. Themes should be positive (even serious themes should be hopeful), inspiring (from a nonreligious standpoint), educational, nonsexist and non-hateful, and, where possible, entertaining. No outright preaching to the reader, and no books with a political or social propaganda.

It’s essential that authors and illustrators be willing to be aggressive and proactive regarding doing publicity and book-related events. Submit a query letter only stating what your book is about, why it’s unique in its field, why you are uniquely qualified to write it, and details on what you are willing to commit yourself to doing to publicize the book once it’s on the market; a short resume of your experience as a writer, including any books you have had published; the potential readership, including the book’s target audience, and your best estimate of its sales potential.
