AndWeWereHungry is a literary and arts online magazine in development. They celebrate the short story while also showcasing a mix of prose, poetry and art by writers and artists from around the world.

AndWeWereHungry announces that Gregory Colbert, the artist behind “Ashes and Snow,” is sponsoring the inaugural international short story contest. The Flying Elephants Short Story Prize is an international contemporary short-story writing competition for emerging writers who have not yet published a novel or short story collection.

In honor of the inaugural issue, they are seeking work inspired by the name, AndWeWereHungry. The late Ray Bradbury, in response to a question as to how was he able to make up stories about space travel when he didn’t even know how to drive a car, once observed “It’s lack that gives us inspiration.” For writers and artists there is a deep connection between hunger, memory, and the imagination in action, and “it’s lack that gives us inspiration.” Contributors are encouraged to freely interpret the theme. Entries should embody a wild diversity of perspective, voice, and style. The most powerful submissions will treat the theme lightly while presenting something new to discover. Final selections will be chosen based on short-story writing excellence in reflection of the theme AndWeWereHungry.
