Writing_Contests_bannerCarteret Writers, Inc. was born in Carteret County, North Carolina, more than 25 years ago and is a charitable, non-profit organization with three goals:

  • Promote the art of writing
  • Cultivate camaraderie among writers
  • Collaborate with other organizations to foster an understanding and appreciation of writing and writers

The 22nd Annual Carteret Writing Contest is now open for submissions.

Open to:  All writers

Genres:   Flash Fiction, Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, Writing for Children

Word length:  
Flash Fiction — 750 words or less
Fiction — 3,000 words or less. May be a short story; chapter, abstracted portion of a chapter, summary, synopsis, excerpt or format of author’s choice. Multiple entries may not be from the same book.
Nonfiction — 3,000 words or less. May be an essay; article; chapter, abstracted portion of a chapter, summary, synopsis, excerpt or format of author’s choice. Multiple entries may not be from the same book.
Poetry — 50 lines or less
Writing for Children — 2,000 words or less. Manuscripts must be suitable for children under the age of 13.

Prizes:  1st Place — $100 and a plaque; 2nd Place – $50; 3rd Place – $25

Entry fee:  Carteret Writers’ members — $5.00 per entry; Non-members — $10.00 per entry
