Black Balloon’s open call for illustrated books

Posted on February 11, 2014

black balloon logoIn their continuous quest to discover and champion books that resist being easily classified, Black Balloon Publishing is issuing an open call for illustrated novels and illustrated works of nonfiction.

“What do we mean by this? Easy, if you have a narrative project that resembles books like And Every Day Was Overcast, Important Artifacts . . . , A Humument, or The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet we want to see it. Projects that will delight and intrigue us will treat text and illustrations as equals; the one will need the other to pull off the story.”

They are not looking for children’s books or traditional graphic novels.

Black Balloon caters to writers who kick conventions curbside, who provoke without sentiment, who make the despicable somehow appealing. They are a small house, however each title receives a personal publicist, targeted marketing plan, promotional trailers and videos, interactive e-books, collage-like apps, and dedicated editors. Your questions will be answered, your concerns, addressed. Your book will not be dropped, remaindered, or ignored. It will be revered.
