November is Picture Book Month

Posted on November 1, 2017

To celebrate Picture Book Month, watch this space for the hottest markets for submitting your picture book manuscript.

This week it’s Albert Whitman & Company. Based in Park Ridge, Illinois, they have been publishing award-winning children’s books since 1919. Best known for the classic Boxcar Children Mysteries series, this publisher has recently expanded into trade market paperbacks. Their goal is to publish 150 books per year by 2020.

Albert Whitman & Company currently has an open submissions policy. They read and review unagented manuscripts and proposals for picture books, middle-grade fiction, and young adult novels. They do not respond to individual submissions unless they are interested. After six months you may assume they are not interested in publishing your work. Simultaneous submissions are okay.

Albert Whitman & Company is seeking:

Picture books for ages 1 to 8
Word count:  Up to 1000 words

Middle-grade novels for ages 12 and under
Word count:  Up to 35,000 words

Young adult novels for ages 12-18
Word count:  Up to 70,000 words

How to submit:  By email only, include cover letter and Word attachment

Be sure to follow the detailed guidelines at Submission Guidelines for Unrepresented Authors

In the meantime, celebrate Picture Book Month and check out the daily blog posts all month from picture book champions explaining why they think picture books are important.
