Established in 1926, Pelican Publishing Company is located in New Orleans. They published William Faulkner’s first trade paperback book. They publish between 40 to 70 new titles a year including art/architecture books, cooking/cookbooks, motivational, popular history (especially Louisiana/regional), children’s books (illustrated and otherwise), and social commentary. Their primary focus appears to be on Southern life, though they are open to submissions from authors of all nationalities living anywhere.

Word length
Picture books (ages 5-8): 1,100 words or less
Middle readers (ages 8 and up): 25,000 words
Adult books: More than 25,000 words
Cookbooks: 200 proposed recipes

How to submit:  By mail only. Send query letter and full manuscript for picture books. For all other submissions query first with sample chapters.
